A nearly 100-year-old concrete structure located just steps off the parkway is getting a brought back to life.
A Fine Wine and Good Spirits will move into a 15,000-square-foot space on the first level of the Reading Co. Grain Elevator building on the corner of 20th and Shamokin streets, Philly.com reported last week. Developer Alterra Property Group plans to bring 24 apartments to the top three floors of the building, which have windows, but leave the middle, windowless floors untouched, the news site reported.
The development—expected to wrap up this year—marks a new life for the historic building, which was constructed in 1925 to store grain in its silos. It was abandoned in 1950 and purchased in the 1970s, when the lower levels were turned into offices and the upper levels converted into penthouses. Most recently, the building has been used as office space.
Over the past few years, the building has seen new developments rise around it, including a 229-unit residential construction right next door, dubbed “The Granary Apartments,” which took its name from its historic neighbor. The apartments, which were completed in 2013, were sold that year to LA-based firm, Lowe Enterprises Investors.
